Abstract

This booklet presents a summary of the participants in the Wind Energy programme in 1989, their contributions to it, and the publications arising from it. A Wind Atlas has been prepared, covering the whole area of the Community and showing the potential of any site. Penetration studies estimate the potential contribution of wind energy over ten mainland grids and the French Islands. 2000 wind turbines are working in Europe, from which data related to performance, costs, machine failure, the effects of rain, ice, insects etc. are gathered together on a database. Three large wind turbines (power rating 1-2 MW) are under development. Technology research includes studies of gust measurements and modelling, wake effects, materials testing, aerodynamics, design criteria, components and stand-alone systems.
