Abstract

A chamber method for the characterisation of the complex composition and time dependence of VOC (volatile organic compounds) emissions from household products is described. Five household products (two liquid floor detergents, a spray cleanser for carpets, a spray polish for furniture and a floor wax paste) were tested. The results are reported and compared with headspace measurements. An empirical mathematical model was used to describe the time dependence of VOC concentrations in the chamber. The model makes it possible to characterise complex emissions and their time dependence with relatively few parameters. Significant differences in the composition of emissions determined in the chamber and in headspace air were observed and are discussed in terms of polarity and water solubility of the emitted compounds.
