Abstract

Two enclosures of plastic material (with a diameter of 40 m and a depth of 6.20 m) have been anchored in the shallow and strongly eutrophic Lake Comabbio in Northern Italy. These isolate a water column from the surface to the lake bed with a theoretical volume of 7500 m3. One enclosure was continuously supplied with oxygen from the 15th of November to the 6th of December 1986, the other kept as control. The experiment was carried out for 72 days (26th September - 9th December). The interactions among fish respiration, photosynthesis and oxygen supply are discussed. The treatment, in spite of the fish respiration and microbic and mineral oxygen consumption, increased the oxygen concentration in the whole water column by 2 mg l in comparison with the concentration in the control.
