Abstract

An interesting alternative method of investigating material deformation characteristics is described. Employing high resolution temperature sensing techniques and adiabatic test conditions, the thermal response to deformation of metals and composites can be characterised from the temperature of the sample surface. Measurement of the thermoelastoplastic limit of a material provides a reliable means of determining the 'yield point'. Macroelastic prestrain can be detected easily by measuring the thermal emission response to a tensile test of the specimen and comparing the T(t) curve generated with that of a virgin specimen tested under the same conditions. Creep damage can also be assessed in a similar manner. The detection of microplastic prestrain in the form of fatigue cycle damage proved unsuccessful.
