Abstract

This book deals with a new class of advanced materials commonly referred to as Pillared Layered Structures (PLS). They are made by propping apart smectite clays with nanostructures acting as pillars and are important because they provide tailor-made supermesh host structures, in which chemical reactions can proceed under gas-phase conditions but at solid-liquid state densities. Such material manipulation holds great promise for future industrial applications, particularly in the area of catalysis, molecular devices and sensors. Topics covered include the present and future applications of microporous and nanocomposite materials, an overview of the structure and properties of the major PLS families and specific opportunities for using PLS materials, processes and characterisations.
