THE CERTIFICATION OF THE CONTENTS OF SIX CHLOROBIPHENYLS (NOS 28, 52, 101, 118, 153 AND 180) IN DRIED SLUDGE CRM 392Funded under: FP2-BCR 4
International agreements on sewage sludge disposal require the level of chlorobiphenyls (CBs) to be monitored. CBs released from domestic and industrial waste concentrate in the organically rich fraction of the sludge which is discharged at sea or on the land, where they persist for a number of years. These compounds are highly toxic and have both carcinogenic and teratogenic properties. The seven CBs considered here have been selected as reference materials because they are frequently detected in sewage sludge and can easily be separated by the analytical techniques described. They are indicative of the main groups of CBs found in sewage sludge.
