Abstract

The charging of the burden materials in a blast furnace by means of a rotating chute is known to be associated with a certain peripheral asymmetry, even when using the ring-type charging method. This asymmetry tends to lead to an irregular stock level throughput the furnace cross-section, causing a number of difficulties in furnace operation. A 1:1 pilot facility for bell-less charging has been used to study the causes of asymmetries and work out the steps to bring it under control. For these studies the working schedule envisaged the steps listed below: - Study of the peripheral dissymmetry of burden distribution for a conventional bell-less top equipment with the furnace top hoppers arranged in parallel; - Reduction of circumferential imbalance of materials by mounting a material flow control valve of iris diaphragm type into the feeder spout; - Optimisation of mass flow centering by fitting the feeder spout with a circular diaphragm; - Arrangement of the hopper vertically above the charging gear, securing central flow with a fully centered stream (central feed). As a result, it has been confirmed that the material centering function of the iris-type gate and the central feed equipment has much improved burden distribution characteristics.
