PRODUZIONE IN ESR DI LINGOTTI CAVI DA ELETTRODI TUBOLARI CON POLVERI METALLICHE
The applicability of the ESR-metal powder (ESR-pm) process for the fabrication of hollow ingots has been verified. The ESR-pm process involves the use of appropriate techniques for the preparation of electrodes that may be of complex form and composition. These are then employed in Electro-Slag Remelting (ESR) in order to fabricate special products that are difficult to manufacture using other technologies. The main innovation of the process concerns the electrode, whose main constituents are metal powders or mixes of ferroalloy powders in a metal container of appropriate shape. The hollow ingot is made from a tubular electrode consisting of two concentric cylindrical tubes mounted concentrically and the powders that fill the space between them. Before hollow ingots could be fabricated, a special plant had to be designed and the characteristics of the electrode and the crystalliser had to be determined. Checks on the remelting behaviour and investigations on the product have confirmed the suitability of the practice for electrode fabrication. Chemical analyses have revealed that the components are duly homogenised during remelting.
