MEASUREMENT OF GIANT MAGNETIC ANISOTROPY IN A URANIUM COMPOUND
Compounds containing 5f actinide elements exhibit even more anisotropic magnetic behaviour than the analogous compounds containing 4f elements. The anisotropy constant K(1) is measured for the cubic ferromagnet US which forms in the NaCl structure. The experimental method uses a beam of polarised slow neutrons, diffracted from the Bragg planes of a single crystal, to determine the direction of the magnetic moment with respect to the direction of the applied magnetic field. The measured value of K(1) was approximately twenty times greater than that in TbFe(2).
