Abstract

A review of the historic and economic importance of the cypress tree in the Mediterranean area is given. The aetiology and epidemiology of bark canker caused by various new species of parasite, such as S.cardinale, are described. In order to arrive at a cure for cypress canker, the effects on the tree of the disease organism Seiridium (species and variants) and the responses of the host to this pest are described. The long-term aim is a genetic solution. The selection and testing of resistant and well-adapted clones are the first elements of this programme.
