Abstract

The present work aims towards the understanding of the hydrodynamic phenomena associated with depressurisation of vessels equipped with vent lines placed either at the top or at the bottom of the vessel. This knowledge is essential for the design of relief devices, as well as for the safe containment of the materials released. For this reason, five depressurisation experiments in vessels containing water under saturation conditions are analysed. The pressure in the vessel during the transient is examined and also the level-swell of the vapour liquid interface and the final void fraction in the vessel when a new state of thermodynamic equilibrium has been reached with the ambient conditions.
