MODELLING MAN-MACHINE SYSTEMS FOR PLANTS SAFETY: THE ROLE OF COGNITIVE APPROACHESFunded under: JRC-REACTSAFE 5C
Ongoing research at JRC-Ispra on the simulation of man-machine interaction is reviewed, with particular reference to the past experience of system modelling and to the advances of the technological world. These require the coalescence of mixed disciplines covering the fields of engineering, psychology and sociology. The complexity of man-machine systems with respect to safety analysis is depicted. The role and position of cognitive models with respect to more "classical", engineering orientated methodologies, like the human reliability techniques, are discussed. The approach proposed at JRC for studying in detail the interaction of complex man-machine systems is the System Response Analyser, which links together contributions from three analytical tools: a quasi-classical simulation of the actual plant, a cognitive model of the operator activities and a driver model. These three tools are briefly described.
