EQHHPP THE 100 MW(E) EURO-QUEBEC HYDRO-HYDROGEN PILOT PROJECT
It is very necessary to develop a new system for the supply of clean and renewable energy, politically and technically independent of existing systems, before the end of this century. The concept of such a system, based on hydrogen, was conceived by the Joint Research Centre, Ispra, and is currently under investigation by industry in Europe and Canada (Quebec), together with the Joint Research Centre. Hydro-power is one of the cleanest, cheapest and, in the short term, most available renewable energy sources. The 100 MW(e) pilot project intends to demonstrate the means of providing clean and renewable primary energy by using hydro-electricity generated and converted via electrolysis into hydrogen in Quebec and transported by ships to Europe, where it can be stored and used in various ways. These include electricity heat water generation, fuel cells operation, automotive vehicles operation, super hypersonic aviation etc. The use of three different hydrogen vectors - methylcyclohexane (MCH), liquid hydrogen (LH(2)) and ammonia (NH(3)) - is under investigation. Mass and energy flows, hydrogen cost, end use utilisation and safety problems are also being considered.
