GEOSCIENCE INVESTIGATIONS OF TWO NORTH ATLANTIC ABYSSAL PLAINS THE ESOPE INTERNATIONAL EXPEDITION VOLUME II
The present report in two volumes is the final report on the results of the international ESOPE expedition. The ESOPE cruise was organised to collect data on the upper tens of metres of unconsolidated sediment in two Atlantic abyssal plain areas. The aim was to assess their radionuclide containment capacity and their suitability for meeting the technical and safety requirements of the subseabed disposal option of high-level radioactive waste. Activities included: - taking sediment core samples down to the proposed waste burial depth (c. 30m); - extensive on-board studies (geology, geochemistry, geotechnics, microbiology) on fresh sediment and pore water samples; - intercalibration and comparison of various laboratory methods; - deployment of various instrumented penetrators and subsequent data recording and interpretation. Volume II deals with the geochemical, microbiological and geotechnical examination of the cores. BRE JRC and CEA penetrator experiments are also described.
