SISTEMA PROTOTIPO INDUSTRIALE PER L'ISPEZIONE SUPERFICIALE DEI NASTRI LAMINATI MAGNETICI E INOX
An automatic surface inspection system has been implemented and tested on the G8 decarburising and annealing line for magnetic strip at Terni Works, comparing it at the same time with defects signalled by the inspector via a special keyboard. The system has a 2048 element solid-state linear sensor and a series of electronic cards which form specialised modules capable of processing the image lines in real time. The shape and position parameters calculated in parallel by the modules are concentrated in eight transverse bands and in sectors of programmable length. They are transmitted to a host computer, where a classification algorithm assigns the defects signalled by the inspection system to one of eight categories of metallurgical defects, producing a printout in which the machine's evaluation, its classification and any indications received from the operator are reported for every defective sector. The results for defects present in statistically significant numbers indicate that the whole system is well capable of detecting and correctly classifying the defects and it is noted that the machine tends to judge the seriousness of these more severely. This has been done deliberately by the predisposition of the set of programmable parameters, which can thus be calibrated to suit the current quality standards.
