To improve the dimensional accuracy of the rolled products, continuous section rolling mills include control systems to keep the longitudinal tensile forces between the rolling stands at a constant level. The direct control of tensile forces offers optimum preconditions for improving the final cross-sections, both with a view to the basic effect and with regard to the required measurement accuracy. However, like the indirect control systems, this method of longitudinal force control is not capable of avoiding dimensional defects resulting from temperature variations. Improvements of the dimensional tolerances are obtained only in the case of defects resulting from cross-sectional deviations in the incoming rolling stock. Different control configurations are investigated with the aid of a simulation model, determining both the influence of disturbances on the major process parameters of all roll stands and the effects that control interventions have on the process variables. The example of the roughing train of a light section steel and wire rod mill is used to show how the rolling stock dimensions are influenced by the variations of cross-section and temperature, when tensile force and adjustment control systems or combinations of tensile force and adjustment control units are used at different stands.
