SVILUPPO DELLA TECNOLOGIA DI FABBRICAZIONE DI BRAMME DI ELEVATA QUALITA E DI GROSSO SPESSORE, DI BRAMME IN ACCIAIO LEGATO E MICROLEGATO PRODOTTE CON IMPIANTI DI COLATA IN PRESSIONE (CPP)
During this research project, a technology has been developed for making high-quality thick slabs (up to 400 mm) of alloyed and microalloyed steel by the controlled pressure pouring (CPP) process. The main defects are horizontal cracks and cracks on the upper transverse edge. Control of the mould heat cycle also appears critical. To identify the links between process and product, a computer instrumentation system has been installed on a 300 mm mould to monitor the most important process variables. Metallographic investigations have been performed on various slab sections. It has been found that this casting process permits the attainment of very low segregation values. Extension of these analyses to cracked samples has confirmed that the formation of horizontal cracks is essentially due to uneven mullite thickness, while the initiation of transverse upper edge cracks is attributable to deformation of the upper steel block of the mould. A big reduction in the transverse edge cracks and horizontal cracks has been obtained by stiffening the upper steel block of the mould, improving the mullite spray plant and operating procedures, and by better management of mould cooling through the application of thermal models.
