IMPACT OF GLACIATION ON GEOLOGICAL DISPOSAL THE PROBLEM OF PREDICTION AND THE CHALLENGE OF MODELLING
The JRC-Ispra developed a methodology to assess the long-term risk related to the disposal of radioactive waste in geological formations. Co-operation with the CEN/SCK of Mol made it possible to check the validity of developed methodology by its application to a possible potential disposal site. A description of a possible scenario for the glacial erosion of a nuclear waste repository, as developed for the site of Mol, is presented. Emphasis is laid upon the dynamic, evolutionary and environmental aspects, because these form the basis for modelling the phenomenon and evaluating the dispersion of radionuclides into the environment. The consequences of the scenario in terms of dose to man are analysed, and the risk is assessed by combining exposures with the corresponding probability of occurrence. On the basis of the consequences alone, the scenario should be considered unacceptable. If, however, the related probabilities are considered, the corresponding risk appears to fall to a reasonably acceptable level.
