VICKERS INDENTATION ON RADIATION DAMAGED CM-CONTAINING WASTE GLASSES
Three nuclear waste glasses have been produced with contents of 0.5 and 1.5 wt.% Cm-244, which is a short-lived actinide (half-life 18.1 years). In this way, significant amounts of radiation damage can be accumulated in a relatively short time, and saturation damage is achieved after a few years of storage. Vickers indentations were made at different damage levels. Both the probability of crack formation and the length of cracks decreased with increasing damage level, corresponding to very significant increases in K(Ic), by up to 100%. Indentation techniques are thus shown to be the ideal means to obtain statistically significant results on a very limited number of specimens.
