THE SAFE DISPOSAL OF RADIOACTIVE WASTE: A DREAM OR A REALISTIC OBJECTIVE?Funded under: FP1-RADWASTOM 3C
After presenting some general data about radioactive waste generation and arisings in various countries, the paper reviews the different disposal concepts and options. The feasibility of deep geological disposal is supported by the current research effort, the main components of which are briefly discussed. On the other hand, methodologies and tools are available for the safety assessment of disposal; the main results of the European Communities' PAGIS exercise are reported and confirm the interest of the geological disposal concept. The final choice of options for disposal is the responsibility of each government, by weighing up technical results and economic and socio-political factors. Examples of disposal policies are given for certain Member States of the European Community.
