The energy challenge of the 21st century: The role of nuclear energy

Funded under: FP6-EURATOM

The Euratom Scientific and Technical Committee - STC - advises the European Commission on all nuclear issues from fission and fusion to radiation protection. One of its main tasks is to analyse future needs for research and expertise within the area of nuclear energy. The STC believes that the EU has a responsibility to take the necessary measures to ensure that all relevant energy options are kept open, including those related to nuclear energy. In the longer term, the increase in world population and a higher standard of living are likely to lead to a much increased demand for power. The intention of this paper is to provide a background for a dialogue concerning the adequate support of current research programmes and the development of technologies for future energy needs beyond the middle of the 21st century.

This paper is published by the European Commission, Directorate-General for Research, as EUR 20634.
