This paper outlines a research project of the Joint Research Centre on the use of remote sensing for land use mapping in the marginal areas of Europe. Existing work has shown the potential of multitemporal image classification based on TM Tasseled Cap features and also of the use of an agro-physical zoning technique to reduce class confusions in unitemporal analysis using a small rule-base. A hardware and software environment is now being developed to permit these techniques to be integrated and to allow more extensive knowledge bases with a probabilistic evidential reasoning scheme to be introduced.
