The SULTAN-III project
The SULTAN test facility is one of the major tools in the European Community for the development of high current superconductors. The SULTAN phase II (a superconducting magnet system with a free bore of 0.58m in diameter and a field of 12 T usable for tests of reacted conductor loops or coils) is close to completion. By relatively small changes of SULTAN II the flexibility of the facility can be considerably enhanced. A split coil configuration can be realised by substituting the present 8T section with two intermediate A-15 coils and by splitting the 6T part, which was previously realised with a pancake structure. In this way the facility will be used for NET conductor prototypes and series acceptance tests as well as for measurements on subsize NET pancakes. In this paper the SULTAN splitting project (SULTAN III) is presented, giving details of the new mechanical structure and the 6T magnet in the split configuration, the two intermediate A-15 coils and the new equipment necessary for high measurement repetition rate including a superconducting transformer and the cryogenic circuitry layout.
