This report concerns the safety of batch reactors under runaway reaction or external fire conditions. This topic has recently received increasing attention from the media and public authorities, as a consequence of several severe accidents which have occurred in the past. Design methods for adequate emergency relief systems, including two-phase flow conditions, are reviewed. In particular, experimental and analytical procedures concerning the in-vessel/venting-line fluid flow descriptions are presented and discussed.
