PAHs are formed in the vapour phase by combustion of fuel under oxygen deficient conditions. Their Nitro-derivatives (NPAHs) are products of the nitration of PAHs with NO(2) and HNO(3) as primary reactants. PAHs and NPAHs are transported through the atmosphere in the vapour phase and condense due to their high boiling points onto the surface of airborne particulates. Formation of PAHs and NPAHs is often connected with the air-pollution due to high traffic volume and industrial activities. PAHs and Nitro PAHs might therefore be an indicator of the overall air pollution situation over urban areas. Depending on the nature of airborne particulates the PAHs and NPAHs adsorbed may be fixed in different ways. As a consequence the methods commonly used for the extraction of PAH/NPAH from airborne dust particulates and the following clean-up procedures described in the literature give variable recovery rates. The aim of this work is to develop a methodology suitable for the analysis of PAHs and Nitro-PAHs adsorbed on suspended particulates of different origin and moreover, to compare the content of PAH and Nitro-PAH in filterdust samples collected at different sites in Europe.
