The prospects for the development of simultaneous execution of operations in standard Fortran over the next ten years
In today's electronic computers, simultaneous execution of operations is available at different levels. Fortran dialects currently exploit vector and parallel architectures with a tremendous increase in performance at the cost of downgrading portability. The proposals for the current revision of the standard Fortran may support, on vector architectures, the effective execution of portable programs, while no primitives are provided for multitasking. Features such as array sections, array-valued expressions and intrinsics and masked assignment are described and some examples discussed.
