Abstract

The available data on surface diffusion and matter transport driven by surface energy in ceramics are reviewed. The competing effects of matter transport by evaporation-condensation and by volume diffusion are treated. The materials considered are mainly oxides (MgO, NiO, Al(2)O(3), Fe(3)O(4), UO(2) etc.), but other ceramics (UC, UN) are also dealt with. The knowledge of surface energies of such ceramics is also reviewed. A number of different techniques has been developed to measure both properties, and the effects of deviation from stoichiometry on surface diffusion or suface energy have been measured for UO(2+-x) and Fe(3-x)O(4). The data are applied to discussions of the technologically important aspects of the formation and the behaviour of gas-filled bubbles in UO(2) nuclear fuel.
