Thermochemical processing of renewable resources and solid fuels is an important method for reducing dependence on imported hydrocarbon fuels. The technologies of pyrolysis and gasification have the added advantage of disposing of various industrial wastes in an environmentally acceptable way. This book contains the text of reports presented at a conference held in Luxembourg in May 1989. During the first session, activities and results of the EC Demonstration Programme in this area, together with overviews of similar research in Canada and the USA, were presented. Later sessions concerned all aspects of pyrolysis and gasification processes, such as feedstock pre-treatment and characterisation, the various technologies, upgrading and utilisation of products, as well as the environmental and economic aspects. Reports of workshops and poster presentations are also included.
