The reports presented in this book cover some of the main themes of current research in soil science, with particular reference to China. The development of sound management practice and planning strategies is highlighted. The idea of comprehensive utilisation, the problems of soil degradation where land is subject to inappropriate uses and the sustainability of soil resources are discussed in detail. The maintenance of environmental quality is also an important theme. Papers are presented under four broad headings: - soil classification, genesis and mapping - soil physics and chemistry relating to water supply for crops and soil erosion - maintaining, reclaiming and increasing soil fertility - lowland agriculture
