Extrapolating the experimental laws describing the energy confinement and the magnetohydrodynamic stability limits in present large tokamaks, it can be shown that stable thermonuclear ignition equilibria should exist in this type of configuration if the aB(t)(x) product of dimensions (a) by a power x of the magnetic field intensity B(t) is large enough. Making a quantitative application of the above result to several tokamaks of the next generation, it appears that such equilibria could exist in these machines. Moreover, the additional heating power which will be available in these devices will be sufficient for ignition to be effectively accessible.
