Treatment of sewage sludge : Thermophilic aerobic digestion and processing requirements for land filling
This workshop concerned research on the processing of sludges and organic wastes, under the COST 681 programme. The two topics considered are thermophilic aerobic digestion and the processing requirements for sanitary land filling with sewage sludge. The first of these is a method of both stabilising and disinfecting sludge. Developments in Switzerland, Germany and the UK are presented. The regulation and practices of landfilling in 15 European countries are reviewed. Aspects such as the transformation of sewage sludge in the early diagenetic stage, its long-term evolution, its rheological characterisation, improved methods of obtaining quality leachate in reduced quantities and in a shorter time and the use of limed sludge as a top cover are discussed in more detail.
