Abstract

The use of tetralin and similar H-donor solvents in the hydroconversion of coal to liquid fuels is important in large-scale coal conversion processes. The present study was undertaken with a new H-donor model compound (4-heptanol) to develop a better understanding of the role of hydrotreating catalysts (Co, Ni, Mo) in promoting the hydrogenation and cracking of aromatic and hydroaromatic compounds. A series of coal hydroliquefaction experiments was carried out in a 1 L stirred autoclave using U.K. (Point-of-Ayr) coal. The influence of operating conditions on liquefaction yields was explored in order to identify possible correlations with the activities and characteristics of the catalysts used.
