Abstract

The evaluation of the geothermal potential of Kos Island has necessitated three types of combined geological and petrological approaches: - reconstitution of the geological history of the island, - detection of deep water reservoirs through alteration products of lithic xenoliths, included in pyroclastic deposits, - exploration and analysis of present thermal activity. Geological, volcanic and hydrological data have provided good evidence of deep and near surface hydrothermal activity. When considered together with geochemical analyses of fluids, these data provide an encouraging basis for the future development of the high enthalpy geothermal activity on Kos Island.
