Mechanisms of gas phase and liquid phase chemical transformations in tropospheric chemistry
Presentations at the 7th discussion meeting of COST 611 Working Party 2 were concerned with problems of pollutant behaviour in the atmosphere. Papers on gas-phase chemistry illustrated the measurement of concentrations of active radical species in flow systems, sulphur and halogen kinetics, photoabsorption cross-section data for ozone in the UV region and for peroxynitric acid, the mechanism of oxidation of volatile organic compounds VOC (emphasising the behaviour of peroxy radicals) and the chemistry of nitrogen oxides and related nitrogen species. Heterogeneous and liquid-phase studies included evidence that aerosols could accelerate rates of photo-oxidation in the gas phase, studies of the oxidation of sulphur and nitrogen species in the liquid phase and laboratory work related to stratospheric ozone depletion.
