This publication is a collation of papers presented at a contractors' meeting of geochemists. A major part of the volume deals with water-rock interactions. Reactions between single crystals and also granites and waters have been studied at different temperatures and pressures. The dissolution behaviour is discussed as well as the formation of secondary minerals. Another topic is the behaviour of clay-containing sandstones in various aqueous media. The transport of clay particles through the sandstone is described as well as the swelling and plugging of pores. The 3He/4He ratio in the helium contained in geothermal fluids or vapours gives an indication of how far these media are influenced by mantle effects. The higher the 3He content, the higher the mantle contribution to the helium content. The isotopic ratio has been measured in various basins in Europe and is used together with other parameters to model the reservoir. Concentrations of CO(2), C and organic compounds in geothermal steam give clues to the temperatures at depth in a geothermal reservoir. This theory is applied to Larderello.
