Social stress in domestic animals
This volume is devoted to social stress in domestic animals, with particular reference to farm livestock. Obviously, the problem of stress has direct relevance to the issue of physiological and mental suffering of animals raised in large groups for industrial production. Various aspects of social recognition are systematically investigated and the contexts in which social stress occurs are defined. The aim is to develop a more sociologically orientated integrative approach to the problem of coping with conspecifics. Contributions consider stimulus, cognitive, response and control aspects of social stress.
