This book provides a series of recommendations in the field of reference methods for the performance evaluation and qualification testing of solar active systems. It lays special emphasis on solar domestic hot water systems, which can already be considered cost-effective in many parts of Europe. Three main test methods are developed, which form the basis of the recommendations. The test procedure developed for unglazed collectors takes into account variations in thermal irradiance and wind speed. The test methods developed for solar air collectors involve the measurement of collector efficiency at one flow rate and the determination of the variation of collector efficiency with mass flow rate. Tests to establish whether a collector is able to resist the influences of high internal fluid pressures, high temperatures and rain penetration (referred to as "qualification tests") are reviewed and evaluated. Finally, the long term natural ageing and the accelerated ageing of collectors and collector components are studied.
