Communicating with the public about major accident hazards : A European conference
The European Commission held a conference at Varese Italy in May 1989 to improve European awareness and understanding of all aspects of major-hazard communication. The conference papers and discussions focussed on the EC and Seveso Directive requirements. The Seveso Directive places precise obligations on Member States to ensure information is actively communicated to persons liable to be affected by such accidents. The prime goals of the conference were to : - exchange ideas about public risk communication; - identify unresolved risk communication issues which require further research; - present guidelines on effective risk communication processes and techniques. However, many issues remained unresolved.
