The measurements of parasitic components in the IMGC, NPL, TNO, LNE and PTB force standard machines by means of the IMGC six component 100 kN dynamometer
The present report describes the main metrological characteristics of six standard deadweight machines, as determined by a 6-component dynamometer especially designed and constructed by IMGC. Several tests were carried out to measure the influence of different parameters on parasitic components, namely: a) eccentricity of the load application point to the dynamometer axis; b) load application rate; c) load transfer system; d) different weight-piece combinations whenever possible; e) different vertical (height) positions of the loading crossbeam to the main machine frame; f) different plate-ball interfaces. The results of several intercomparisons show uncertainties higher than expected. The main sources of the differences are parasitic effects caused by undesirable components (side forces and moments) generated by asymmetry in machine structure, non-symmetric deformations of the loaded machine, faulty load cell positioning on the machine, and machine-load cell interaction. The report concludes by suggesting ways of improving the performance of force standard machines.
