Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

In 1982 the European Community decided to implement a research and development programme to mobilise science and technology in support of economic and social development in developing countries. The first Science and Technology for Development programme (STD1) covered the period 1983-1986. It funded 421 projects - 238 in tropical agriculture and 183 in tropical medicine. This report presents a summary of the results obtained from projects supported by the subprogramme Medicine, Health and Nutrition in the Tropics. The medical subprogramme was essentially aiming at : i) the discovery of new approaches to the prevention and treatment of transmissible diseases; 2) operational research on health care systems in order to adapt them more effectively to the rural and urban environment of developing countries; 3) a study of the links between food strategies and the nutritional and health status of the less favoured populations.
