HERODE is an erosion model designed for a time scale of several thousands or tens of thousands of years. It includes not only transportation of materials removed along the flank of a fold but also weathering processes in a substratum. The model is drawn up from an equation (similar to the diffusion equation), which is conventionally used to describe the transportation of materials and the evolution of the high points of a relief. Its originality, among similar types of model, lies in the fact that it takes mechanical and chemical weathering laws into account, together with the transportation equation. The model can simulate the evolution of a relief in a catchment area by the action of some or all of the erosion factors taken into account : particularly run-off, pluvial saltation and creep, as far as transportation is concerned. The effect of excavating a river or other waterway can also be simulated. Two examples are given to demonstrate the possibilities of the model.
