This paper, after a short introduction to superconductivity and to multifilament superconducting composites, reviews the state of the art and the future perspectives of some of the applications of superconducting materials. Interest is focussed mainly on large scale applications such as magnets for accelerators or fusion reactors, superconducting systems for NMR tomography etc. A short paragraph is dedicated to applications for high sensitivity instrumentation. The paper concludes with some consideration of the potential of the newly discovered high critical temperature materials.
