This research compares the corrosion resistance of different steels exposed either on a running car, or on 5 fixed stations along the circuit run by the car, and by means of different standardised accelerated corrosion tests. This study has shown few significant differences between mild steels sampled from industrial lines, in spite of the large range of investigated surface chemistries. Only the high strength steels, with a chemical analysis different from the mild steels, have shown a better rust resistance. The quality of the finishing treatments (phosphatation + chromic rinsing) plays a prominent part in corrosion. The nature of the exposure site also has a strong influence. Examinations with a scanning electron microscope have shown geometrical, morphological and chemical similarities between corrosion products seen on samples exposed in a real time and those submitted to the "Scab test". On the other hand, the salt spray test diverges on many points from the real time exposure. Finally, a 3-step cyclic corrosion model is proposed which takes into account all the observations made during this research.
