Optimization of image quality and patient exposure in diagnostic radiology
The CEC is seeking to establish general agreement on verifiable criteria defining acceptable quality of a radiograph for a given diagnostic examination throughout the Member States. 77 papers were presented at the Workshop on "Optimization of Image Quality and Patient Exposure in Diagnostic Radiology" held in Oxford in September 1988. The papers deal with problems of image perception as well as interpretation and with the quantification of image quality. The optimisation requirements for a series of clinical situations were considered in detail. Long-term surveys of trends in diagnostic radiology have demonstrated that regular quality checking contributes in large measure to the restriction of dose ranges and the reduction of both the mean patient dose and the number of unacceptable radiographs. A working document was produced containing the quality criteria for six common diagnostic examinations : chest, skull, lumbar spine, pelvis, breast and urinary tract.
