A regional siting study for urban waste disposal : The decision support model PURPLEFunded under: JRC-INDHAZ 2C
The aim of this report is to construct a decision support system for the rational organisation of urban solid waste disposal on a regional scale. In particular this involves setting up a software tool for planning the siting of waste disposal plants, specifying their type and size, to make the impact on the environment as low as possible, to keep down overall costs and to encourage recycling and the recovery of resources from waste. The work refers to an Italian situation and in particular to Lombardy and the model developed is applied to this region. This does not mean that the model is aimed only at the study of the case of Lombardy; it has been attempted to design a system which can also be used, with suitable modifications, for the study of other situations.
