Abstract

This publication records talks given at the workshop held in Grenoble in September 1988 as part of the Commission's "Energy" demonstration programme. The discussion deals with all aspects of the use of photovoltaic systems in isolated mountain huts. The technical problems raised concern the availability of data on solar radiation, the construction of installations on a modular design, the choice of appliances, anti-frost protection for batteries, energy supply, follow-up instruments and solar heating systems. Environmentalists have been concerned that the first systems were too large. Now only the financial problems remain, although given the high costs of any electricity production in isolated locations, photovoltaic systems are still competitive. Many social questions are also discussed. In the end users were satisfied, despite the problems of theft and security, or of changes in the behaviour of mountaineers which increase energy consumption.
