Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) is the application of Information Technology to all aspects of the manufacturing cycle. It offers greater efficiency, a faster response to change and the opportunity to manufacture products of greater sophistication. CIM Europe is an Information and Awareness activity of ESPRIT. Its function is to consolidate and enhance the effects of ESPRIT by disseminating information on progress and achievements in the programme. It stimulates interaction between project teams in CIM and other areas, encouraging the development and the application of CIM techniques to the benefit of European Industry. The fifth CIM Europe Conference was held in Athens, Greece, on 17-19 May 1989. It included papers on the application and benefits of CIM for smaller firms as well as presentations relating to the human aspects. Other topics discussed included electronic communication, automation, robotics and artificial intelligence.
