Abstract

Positron annihilation studies are presented in order to reveal details in the microstructure of amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C:H) which cannnot be resolved by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The first study already shows that micropores of about 0.5 nm in diameter occupy at least 3% of the total volume in a-C:H. This result is consistent with quite contrary models for the microstructure of a-C:H. Further clarification through extended positron studies is discussed.
