A methodology for determining residual stress in materials by shifts in characteristic X-ray diffraction peaks has been established. The theoretical and experimental basis for the measurement in engineering ceramics has been determined. An updated literature review with special reference to ceramic and ceramic composite materials is presented. The definition of the technical parameters, development of a calibration procedure and evaluation of the accuracy of the measurements are the three main features of the experimental work described. The methodology has been evaluated by measuring machining damage on Si(3) (N4) ceramics. The different theoretical and experimental approaches have also been assessed and the results interpreted with respect to these. The methodology has been extended to measure interphase residual stresses in ceramic-matrix composites.
