This paper gives an overview of the Isotopic Lead Experiment (ILE), a large scale field project on the assessment of the contribution of petrol lead to the total lead in human blood, air and the environment. From the final data, the contribution of local petrol lead to airborne particulate lead is calculated to be about 85% for downtown Turin and 60% for its countryside. The contribution of local petrol lead to adult blood lead is about 24% for Turin, 12% for the belt closer than 25km and 8% for the area beyond. On average the absolute contribution of local petrol lead to blood lead therefore in Turin is about 6 micro-g/dl. This figure suggests that petrol lead might well represent a quite important blood lead fraction for populations with low blood lead concentration exposed to petrol lead. The lead intake by plants is also considered.
